the Sara Crewe ballet dress

One of our customers recently asked us if we could recreate a dress from Frances Hodgson Burnett’s classic story A Little Princess; she told us she’d grown up reading the book and to her, Tasha Tudor’s illustration of Sara’s “rosy ballet dress” was the pinnacle of perfection.  Of course we said we’d take on the challenge!   It took us a little while (and several mockups) to figure out how best to make the little tucks on the side of the skirt.  Once we had the main bodice lines figured out, we could do the fun tasks: adding French lace to the hem and collar, building a little rosette for the neckline, and of course, stitching the giant bow to the back of the dress!

  1. I must say that the part of the book where Sara walks in on a sleeping Becky is one of my favorite parts. I always tried to picture what the beautiful rose dress looked like. Now, when I listen to the book on tape, this dress always comes to mind. Wonderful job.

      • Favorite story, favorite character!

Please please let us know when the dress becomes available again–
        — I WANT ONE!

  2. The dress is really beautiful! Where an I get a copy of the pattern? I would love to make of these for my granddaughter

    • Thank you Dorothy! At present, we don’t have a pattern published for this dress — but once we do, it’ll be available on Pixie Faire along with the rest of our patterns 🙂
